Secret No More: Revealing Windows XP Mode for Windows 7

Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott reveal a new Windows 7 application compatibility feature called Windows XP Mode. Yes, it’s that “secret new feature” you’ve been hearing about …

Over a month ago, we were briefed about a secret Microsoft technology that we were told would be announced alongside the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) and would ship in final form simultaneously with the final version of Windows 7. This technology, dubbed Windows XP Mode (XPM, formerly Virtual Windows XP or Virtual XP, VXP), dramatically changes the compatibility story for Windows 7 and, we believe, has serious implications for Windows development going forward. Here’s what’s happening.

XPM is built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC 7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like Hyper-V, Microsoft’s server-side virtualization platform. However, XPM is not Hyper-V for the client. It is instead a host-based virtualization solution like Virtual PC; the hardware assistance requirement suggests this will be the logical conclusion of this product line from a technological standpoint. That is, we fully expect future client versions of Windows to include a Hyper-V-based hypervisor.

XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3). It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions via a download from the Microsoft web site. (That is, it will not be included in the box with Windows 7, but is considered an out-of-band update, like Windows Live Essentials.) XPM works much like today’s Virtual PC products, but with one important exception: As with the enterprise-based MED-V (Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization) product, XPM does not require you to run the virtual environment as a separate Windows desktop. Instead, as you install applications inside the virtual XP environment, they are published to the host (Windows 7) OS as well. (With shortcuts placed in the Start Menu.) That way, users can run Windows XP-based applications (like IE 6) alongside Windows 7 applications under a single desktop.

Obviously, XPM has huge ramifications for Windows going forward. By removing the onus of legacy application compatibility from the OS, Microsoft can strip away deadwood technology from future versions of Windows at a speedier clip, because customers who need to run older applications can simply do so with XPM. For Windows 7 specifically, XPM is a huge convenience, especially for Microsoft’s corporate customers, who can of course control XPM behavior via standard Microsoft administration and management technologies like Active Directory (AD) and Group Policy (GP). And it significantly recasts the Windows 7 compatibility picture. Before, Microsoft could claim that Windows 7 would be at least as compatible as Windows Vista. Now, they can claim almost complete Windows XP compatibility, or almost 100 percent compatibility with all currently running Windows applications.

We’ve both been using and testing Virtual XP for over a month and we we’ve been dying to communicate what we’ve discovered, as you might imagine. So here’s what you can expect. Paul will publish a high-level screenshot gallery on the SuperSite for Windows showing off Windows XP Mode and what it’s like to run Windows XP and Windows 7 applications side-by-side. On Within Windows, Rafael will provide a deep technical dive into Windows XP Mode and explain how it works and how you can make it work the way you want. Later, Paul will add a Windows XP Mode article to his Windows 7 Feature Focus series as well. And of course we’ll be covering this feature in-depth in “Windows 7 Secrets,” which will be published by Wiley & Sons later this year.

Thanks for reading!

Paul and Rafael

Look Up Bank Routing Numbers Free

The Best place I have found to search for bank routing numbers is here.

http://www.routingnumbers.org/

Now, the only reason I put this up is because I really had to work hard and find a routing number to get checks reordered for an acocunt that I had opened in another state years ago when I was a kid and they wanted me to DRIVE all the way into the state to do the transaction in person.

So, this helped.

Here are some direct links to their site:

Discipleship | Exeperiencing GOD

I love this article by Blackaby and I am adding it here because I think this is an EXCELLENT thought on Discipling people. I am big on the Missional type of church and that church focuses on Discipleship and the Kingdom of GOD.

So, here is the lesson…

pd

__________________________

Christian Discipleship

Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. (Colossians 1:28)

Discipleship is personally transferring the full dimensions of your relationship with Christ to the person you are walking with. It is not the imparting of spiritual disciplines as much as it is acquainting another with a Person you love. Paul said that he would teach and urge with all his strength that every person God placed in his life would come to a complete experience of the person of Christ (Col. 1:29). He was not satisfied with people becoming partially like Christ. He would not rest until those around him were perfect, or complete, in Christ. That is, that the fruits of the Spirit were being fully expressed through each life and the character of Christ was reflected in each person (Gal. 5:22).

We can mistake Christian activity with becoming like Christ. Christian activity and Christlikeness are not the same things. We must not assume that because our friend attends church and reads her Bible, she is growing as a Christian.

Christian activities are an important expression of your relationship with Christ. They can lead you to a relationship, but the danger is assuming that your religious activity is the relationship. If you are only encouraging those around you to attend Christian activities, then you have not “discipled” them the way Paul did. You do your_fellow Christians an injustice by teaching them that Christian activity is equal to Christian maturity. Do not rest until those around you have become “perfect” in Christ. If God has put new Christians under your care, you have an obligation to “stay with them” until they have reached Christian maturity.

Our Little List of Sin | Remembering 2007-2009 in World Economics

I wanted to put a list of our shame as the citizens of the world. I thought it might be interesting to see just what has happened in the last 2 years as we have watched the shaming of our nations revealed through this economic downturn. It amazes me that corporate greed, consumerism and capitalism have come so far.

So many have sold their souls.

May we never forget!

Experiencing GOD | Henry Blackaby | Jesus is the Door

This morning reading this devotional really affected me. I had to post it here. I have been talking about Poppa wanting access for a while now and this really is encouraging on that note.

pd

_________________________________

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9)

As Christians, we talk about God “opening doors” to us as a means of His revealing His will. What we are asking God to do is engineer our circumstances to match what we think would be best. The problem is that we misunderstand what the door is. Jesus said He is the door. Circumstances are irrelevant, for no one can shut the door that Jesus opens (Rev. 3:8). If you have substituted activity for your relationship with Christ, then circumstances can disrupt your activity. When the activity is hindered, you may assume the door has been closed. Yet, if Christ is the door in your life, He will guide you into every experience of Him that He wants, and there will be nothing that people can do to stop Him.

When Paul and Silas were thrown into prison at Philippi, it appeared that the door to their ministry in Greece had been violently and firmly closed (Acts 16:22–24). The reality of their situation, however, was that their Lord had opened a door of ministry to a previously unreached group of men in prison. The Philippian jailer and his household would become a significant nucleus of the new church in Philippi. From a human perspective, a door had been closed; from God’s perspective, Paul and Silas continued to minister exactly where God wanted them to.

When people oppose us, we can become discouraged or worry about what others are doing to us. We may even try to take matters into our own hands to accomplish what we think God wants. This reveals that we do not really believe Jesus is the door for our lives. If we did, we would be assured that through Christ we have access to everything He wants to do in and through us.

CYPRUS | An Update from Tony | 2009-4-27

Dear Friends and Family,

First let me excuse myself for sending out another email in such a short amount of time. It has become crunch time here at Gateways so I am having to take care of all my affairs as the end of the school is approaching. As I have mentioned in previous update letters, I am going to Ethiopia for my school’s month long outreach trip. I will be leaving in just over three weeks from now. While I am there I will be working at orphanages and feeding centers, ministering in prisons, working with various churches, and doing a lot of street evangelism. My hope is to be used by God to impact that nation and see a fiery generation run after the heart of God.

In order for me to go on this trip I have to be able to raise $1950 by April 30th. To date I already have $1435 which leaves me a mere $515 short. I am asking for your support to help me raise my final amount within the next three days. Please pray about supporting me and see if God is leading you to help me reach this goal. There are two ways you can support me.

1. You can go to http://www.gatewaysbeyond.org/donate and designate your donation to go towards “Tony Dillon”.

2. You can write a check out to “Gateways Beyond International” with my name written in the memo line and mail it to:

Gateways Beyond International
PO Box 155101
Ft. Worth, TX 76155

Again, thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. I really do appreciate you all and your friendship. I look forward to seeing or talking with you and telling you about all the amazing things we will have seen and experienced in Ethiopia. God bless.

Sincerely,

Tony Dillon

Re: Got Heart? Got Muscle? Got a couple hours on your hand?

I wanted to clarify and share with you more about the clean out project we are taking on the in a few weeks. I apologize if I have not been able to communicate the need or the purpose of this effort. I work with affordable housing projects and this one building has been one of the most challenging projects I have encountered. The property has 30 units, 23 are occupied with low income households and without assistance is on an eminent course towards foreclosure. Here is the background.

The property is located in a small enclave of dense populated apartments in NW DC. Historically, housing stock in the area has been substandard. It’s cheap and available to those who cannot find subsided housing, mostly the working poor. During the housing boom earlier this decade the surrounding neighborhood fell prey to development pressures, landlords  using illegal tactics to displace families so they could renovate and convert to high end condos.  Some of the tactics used include stopping services (trash, heat, repairs). This caused a great distrust and suspicion among the people in the area and outsiders, a problem that still exists today.  During the height of the housing boom (2005) the landlord put this property up for sale and the tenants together seized the opportunity to purchase so to determine the fate of their home. Working with a non profit developer they put a plan together that included purchasing, renovating and keeping the costs affordable to all who lived there. The tenants , collectively  would  homeowners so to be able to determine their own housing circumstance .  Long story short  they did buy the property but then funding (low cost loans) required renovating the building fell through (that is another story for another time) and the residents are left with a delipated property and non-profit developer who walked away.

The residents here have overcome many obstacles, not just with the building itself but with problem residents, court battles, and security issues.  A handful of residents who understand the issues and the impact it has on their families and neighbors have stuck with me as we seek out long term viable solutions. Many non-profit groups I have solicited for support initially were interested have backed out.

Peter, Fidilis, G-Sue, Lori,  Daeho, Melisa, Dustin, Lisa and I (the Foundation)  and have agreed that this project is worth standing by and we are asking for your help.  The Association was able to secure limited funding to renovate many of the inhabitable vacant units. Once these units are renovated, they can be offered to the other low income families and their monthly charges can assist with the mortgage of the building. In order for the units to be renovated they must be cleaned out (the funding received cannot be used to clean out the property). We have committed to cleaning out one of the units on Saturday, April 25 at 10 am. Basically we will be moving out broken appliances, mattress and stuffing trash into bags. The job is a very dirty one, as we might encounter critters (bed bugs, fleas, and ??). I do not want to mislead anyone into thinking that this will be an easy project. Besides the dirty work  you can come to support the residents efforts and provide encouragement.

Another way you can assist is donating funds for the cost associated with moving the trash. We have priced out costs and we need about $300 . We already have a commitment of $100. Any amount of funds available would be greatly appreciated. Pat and Daeho are setting up a paypal account if you want to contribute online, we can also take donations on Sunday.

Let me know if you have questions or would like additional details. I am privileged to share this part of my life with you and would love to see you be a part of the effort of these residents to secure safe, affordable and decent housing.

Also for those of you who have already planned on coming, we are looking for people to pick up the uhaul and drive them. We will also try to carpool on to the event. Email me back and i will put you on the details and logistics email.

Living Water

For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns–broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13)

There should never be “dry spells” in the Christian life. God said that He would be like an artesian well in the life of a believer. Artesian wells bubbled forth with a cold, fresh, never-ending supply of water from the depths of the earth, quenching any thirst and always satisfying. This is the picture of the spiritual refreshment that belongs to the person in whom the Holy Spirit resides.

Have you ever heard people say they are experiencing a dry spell in their Christian life? What are they saying? Are they saying that the Lord ran out of water? It should never cross your mind that the fountain of living waters residing within you should ever be reduced to a trickle. You don’t need to run all over the country trying to find sources of spiritual refreshment. Conferences, retreats, and books can all bring encouragement, but if you are a Christian, the source of living water already resides within you.

Have you exchanged the living fountain for man-made cisterns that cannot hold water? Why would you exchange an artesian well for a broken water tank? Artesian wells do not dry up. Broken cisterns do. If you are experiencing spiritual dryness right now, is it because you have been attempting to find your source of spiritual refreshment from man-made sources, which will fail you every time? Jesus extended an invitation to you when He said: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37). Have you been refreshed by the living water only Jesus can provide?
